The safe and efficient destruction of mines, UXO and other EO is an integral part of mine action. EOD operations involve the detection, identification, field evaluation, render‑safe, recovery and disposal of EO. EOD may be undertaken as a routine part of mine clearance operations following the discovery of EO. Such operations may involve a single item of EO or a number of items at a specified location, such as a mortar or artillery gun position. They may also involve stockpiles of ammunition or AXO left in bunkers or ammunition points. Destruction of ammunition and explosives, whether carried out by demolition or by burning, is inherently dangerous. Numerous accidents have occurred, resulting in deaths, injuries and damage; therefore, the correct EO identification and strict adherence to EOD procedures must be taken when conducting EOD tasks.
Where permanent disposal sites are established, either for the routine disposal of stocks of safe-to-move EO, for bulk disposal or for stockpile destruction operations, it is the responsibility of the BADIA DEMINING Technical Manager to establish the Central Demolition Site (CDS) in consultation with the relevant Syrian authority.
